The SOIL Learning Lab provides and educational space which combine programs that teach sustainability along with the Portrait of a Graduate competencies to students of all ages.

we're going to have a model where you guys are going to do to be the planet we're going to imagine the Durango school district is committed to ensuring all students build their portrait of a graduate competencies and we believe a primary way to do this is through sustainability education opportunities that's where the soil lab project comes into play an Innovative multi-generational environmental career-focused space the soil lab sustainability outdoor in oceanlab is a model of community and School District partnership not only is the soil lab the perfect place to build creative problem-solving and pathetic collab Haitian and courageous leadership but there is ample scientific evidence pointing to the many profound benefits for children and adults for students these benefits include intellectual creative physical social and emotional health well-being and develop the soil Garden is really an incredible tool to integrate our students and our curriculum and our educational experiences into the sustainability program and have the students really be a part of it and providing them with really deep engaging experience the connects to their learning but also to the community at large and to ensure that they have a sustainable future for 10 years the students at Riverview Elementary School realize these benefits while spending time and their school garden beds that are nearby Garden fifth graders who started visiting the garden as kindergartners recently scored in the 98th percentile during 5th grade Colorado State standardized testing for science highlighting the positive impact of Amazon outdoor education when the community garden was scheduled to close there was a strong desire to continue and expand upon would have been started Riverview Elementary School with my alma mater just had so much can you space and I thought Josh could we not do something really Visionary up here something that would really Inspire generations of kids and local adults as well flower that taste like pizza crust this led to a community and Gage design and brainstorming process students and community members were invited to design their dream Garden a good tomato School District provided a location Durango Parks and Recreation jumped in to support a new community garden and local experts and organizations helped map what might be possible through this collaborative process the soil Outdoor Learning lab concept was born it tastes as a pizza and our goal is to build a world-class educational recreational and Innovative facility that focuses on sustainability and is based on a food call Shannon Agriculture and community members are living out our portrait of a graduate competencies they are a pathetic collaborators resilient risk-takers creative problem-solvers adulting confident communicators and courageous leaders The Learning lab will be built in six phases Phase 1 a community garden opened to community members School groups and partnering organizations on June 1st 23 construction of the community garden was primarily funded by individual donors and local business sponsors who saw the value and potential of the soil Outdoor Learning lab hundreds volunteers work together to build a beautiful garden space during the first growing season the community garden has provided produce to schools across the district hosted student field trips ranging from preschool to college benefit Eastern career pathway Camp work projects hosted community events and provide a community engagement Phase 2 will be a 42 ft Crow do with construction scheduled for 2020 for the grow down will offer year-round growing space to apply Innovative techniques and Technologies to inspire and encourage as all thinkers the next phase will be the Hub The Hub will provide interactive exhibits and demonstration Gardens to challenge the to be courageous leaders as they work to create a sustainable future the soil shed will engage students as creative problem-solvers as they explore that secret world soil and apply sustainable uses of their swells as construction materials the egg lab will build empathetic collaborators as students Advance sustainability through a food Forest Animal husbandry and Farm Market stand to learn about sustainable and regenerative agriculture finally the education center will consist of an indoor classroom and growing space to expand year-round programming there will also be a commercial demonstration kitchen to Foster entrepreneurial startups killing our next generation of Joliet West Acres how old is a little seed make a big pumpkin the soil Outdoor Learning lab is already providing learning opportunities and advancing initiatives to promote a sustainable future I have a pain in my eyes as our District's kind of collaborative approach to education in our community because this isn't just a 9 our program we have partnered with the city and the college and all sorts of nonprofits around town to make this a real benefits of a whole community I think that's just a really neat model moving forward for us these impacts will multiply and the future by combining the Hands-On learning facility with sustained bility based pedagogy and curriculum in a place based and project-based learning a framework living out our portrait of a graduate competencies connecting students on a deep level to their learning to help them to thrive now and in the future
