Music
Welcome to Music Class! My name is Shannon Fontenot and this is my 12th year teaching music at Riverview Elementary. I love helping kids explore the world of music that surrounds them. In the music classroom at Riverview, kids are actively learning. We make music in so many ways. We sing, we dance, we play instruments, we read music, we create music, and we have a great time!
My Music Journey
My journey with music started at ten years old when I began studying the piano. At the University of California at Santa Cruz, I earned a B.A. degree in Music with an emphasis in Piano. After graduation I studied with Bob Duke and Judith Jellison at the University of Texas at Austin to learn all I could about teaching music in public schools. This was where I fell in love with teaching young children.
After graduation I worked in the Eanes ISD in Austin as an Elementary Music teacher and learned about Orff-Schulwerk. I was fascinated by the idea of students learning music as an extension of play and I wanted to learn more. During the summers of 2001-2033, I attained my Levels I-III Orff-Schulwerk AOSA certification at the University of Nevada at Las Vegas with master teachers Randy DeLelles, Jeff Kriske, Shirley McRae, Sue Mueller, and Kay Lehto.
One thing I've learned as an educator for the last 17 years is that I can always learn something new. I went back to school in 2014 to pursue a graduate degree. In the Spring of 2016 I received my M.A. degree in Music Education from Adams State University in Alamosa, Colorado.
My Family in Durango
When I am not teaching music, I am usually spending time enjoying life with my family. My husband Russell and I have two fun and vibrant kids and motley crew of pets. We love to camp, ski, hike, read, and play with our dog Piper. If you see us out and about around town, wave a "Hello!"
