Riverview Students Treat Local Seniors to a Halloween Parade

This is the second year in a row that RVE students have visited the senior community, and this year’s 5th graders will visit a few more times over the school year as part of their service-learning activities.

“Making the connection with another generation is really important,” said RVE 5th-grade teacher Oscar Trono, who helped spearhead the student visits to SGSC. “Last year, I heard that some of the residents hadn’t talked for a month or so, but started talking when the kids visited.”

After the costume parade this Halloween, students shared hugs, kind words, and orange frosted sugar cookies with the residents, who were visibly moved by the camaraderie.

One resident teared up while receiving multiple hugs from a young pirate. Wiping her eyes, she said, “I don’t know whose idea this was, but it was a good one!”
