Hello from Mr. M’s class. The kids are all doing a fine job; we are learning a lot, and having a good time. We have studied quite a variety of things so far. Here are some of the highlights.
In reading, we have enjoyed reading many different stories in class. There have been challenges for readers at all levels. We have worked on comprehension skills, vocabulary and grammar. We are also learning about fiction story elements. Our math classes have been rather intriguing so far. Our first unit covered place value and patterns. We have learned to use tables and graphs to collect and assess information. Currently we are working on addition and subtraction strategies, as well as solving word problems. Please continue to work on basic addition and subtraction math facts at home. The kids are very fast counters, but still need work to get the facts memorized.
Learning to write correctly and effectively can be very difficult at this age! Currently we are concentrating on paragraphing and following the main idea throughout the paragraph. We are also reviewing rules for punctuation, spelling, and grammar.
Our first social studies unit is focused on communities and city government. We are learning about different sizes of communities. We have discussed possible reasons people have for choosing where they live. Currently we are learning about the many services city governments provide for their citizens by reading the City of Durango Report to Citizens.
Finally, the lost and found is already overflowing. Soon, all items will be taken to a local thrift store. Please remind students to check for lost items.
- There is no school for students on Friday, October 26 or on Monday, October 29.
