March 2018 Principal's Letter to our parents.

Community Meeting:

Please join us on Wednesday, March 14th for our 2nd ‘Community Meeting’ and PTO meeting. The event starts at 5:30 and child care (and pizza) will be available. From 5:30 until 6:15 we will run a community meeting at which we will share the results from our recent parent survey (now available on the school website), then follow up with 2 focus groups: Mr. Geygan will facilitate a feedback group about academic and general school improvement efforts; Mr. Pecorino will facilitate a feedback group about social/emotional school improvement efforts. Information from both groups will help form our 18-19 school improvement efforts.  At 6:15 we will shift into our regular PTO meeting and we encourage all to stay for both meetings.

State Assessments:

The time of year for state assessments is just around the corner. Students in grades 3-5 will be given an opportunity to show what they can do on the CMAS tests (Colorado Measure of Academic Success). The assessments begin March 19th and run through April 27th. We have posted the schedule to download so you can be aware of when your child will be taking the assessments. Following are a few common questions about state assessments:

How is the information used?

  • The school and district uses the information to monitor school effectiveness. We look at achievement (how students score at that point in time) and, perhaps more importantly, growth (how students perform from one year to the next). We also look at various population groups (for example, students in our Special Education program, or students identified as Gifted and Talented) to evaluate programing effectiveness and areas we need to improve as a school and/or district. Riverview has previous results posted at our websites with a narrative from the school about strengths and areas of needed improvement.
